What are your thoughts on Queer?
November 16 at 9:00pm
Hi Mark,
Hmm, what are my thoughts on Queer.
I can't say I have a whole lot of thoughts on Queer...except, perhaps, that we as a country should treat everyone nicely and as equals under the law (that is, I don't understand how someone can honestly say they support the U.S. constitution and at the same time say they are against gay marriage--the two viewpoints are irreconcilable as far as I am concerned.).
And the word Queer itself, I do find interesting as a cultural phenomena. At one time it was so derogatory (used by the dominant culture to identify a group of people as the "other" in post-modern parlance). Yet the very people it was supposed to degrade picked it up and now own it. The term Queer is a point of pride and is probably an object lesson in the proper way to respond to that sort of aggression. I am reluctant to use the term myself, just as I am reluctant to use a certain word beginning with the letter N. Friends have let me know that they can use this N word, but I can't because I haven't paid for it and don't own it. I get a similar sense with the propriety of my using the term Queer--in fact, I even have to take a breath before I type it. But for you, dear Mark, I will be brave.
